What are antibacterial tiles?
Our anti-bacterial tiles are a range of tiles using a new and innovative technology, where a bio-compound is added to the tiles glaze during the single firing stage of manufacturing. This bio-compound gives three key benefits: Antibacterial Antiviral Anti-pollution Bacteria are microscopic, single-cell organisms that can reproduce or multiply on their own, viruses are smaller particles of genetic material and they use their hosts DNA to reproduce and multiply. Although most bacteria and virus materials are harmless to health, there are few that can cause illness.
How does this technology work?
This technology uses photocatalytic activity which is the process of using light to speed up or activate the chemical reaction in which the technology contributes to eliminating bacteria organisms or virus material on the surface. This chemical reaction causes the tiles surface to be uninhabitable to most bacteria and viruses and so reduces the transmission of these germs, providing a safer environment for health. With as little as 8 hours exposure to light the tiles surface has shown to reduce bacteria and virus presence by up to 99.9%, and even when in darker conditions for the same length of time, the technology continues to reduce traces of bacteria and virus particles of between 95% and 99%.
How is bacteria classified?
Bacterial species are classified into two categories based on their cell walls: Gram-Positive Bacteria and Gram-Negative Bacteria. In order to identify the efficacy of the technology, tests have been carried out using two main types of bacteria, Escherichia Coli (E.Coli) GRAM-NEGATIVE BACTERIA and Staphylococcus Aureus (S.Aureus) GRAM-POSITIVE BACTERIA. As the technology has proven to be effective with both positive and negative types of bacteria, we can confidently say these tiles have antibacterial properties.
What is meant by anti-polluting?
Nitrogen Oxides (NO) are produced in combustion processes, such as having an open fire or combustion engines such as cars. Tiles using this innovative technology have anti-pollution properties as the photocatalytic activity of these tiles has proven to reduce the particles of these gases when coming into contact with its surface by up to 20.7%, and therefore creating a cleaner air.
